Secret Santa Generator
Paste your gift exchange list and get random pairings in seconds, with rules to keep couples, partners, or family members apart.
Paste your names above — one per line.
How to use it
- List everyone taking part, one name per line.
- Add a "keep apart" rule for any couples, partners, or family members in the list.
- Generate the pairings — reshuffle if a rule needs adjusting.
- Message each person their match individually, rather than sharing the full list.
Fair pairings, with the awkward exclusions handled
A Secret Santa list almost always has at least one pairing that has to be avoided — a couple who'd rather not buy for each other, siblings in a family exchange, or a manager and their direct report in an office swap. Doing this by hand usually means literally redrawing names out of a hat until the unwanted pairing doesn't come up, which gets tedious fast with more than one exclusion. This generator handles it properly: set every exclusion as a keep-apart rule up front, and the shuffle will never produce those pairings, no matter how many times you regenerate.
One thing worth being upfront about: this tool is not a secret-assignment system. It generates and displays the full set of pairings on your screen — it doesn't privately email each participant their individual match the way a dedicated Secret Santa app might. Generate the pairings on your own screen, not projected or shared live, then message each person their match individually — by text, DM, or a sealed note — so the pairings stay a surprise for everyone but you.
The default here is group size 2, producing simple one-to-one pairings, which covers most gift exchanges. Some groups run gift exchanges in threes or fours instead — a "Secret Santa pod" where three people each buy for the other two, for example — in which case just increase the group size and the same rules and exclusions still apply.
Because everything runs in your browser with no server or database behind it, you can paste in a real list of colleagues, friends, or family without it going anywhere beyond your own device — genuinely relevant here, since a leaked pairing list would spoil the entire point of the exchange. See our privacy page for the full detail on what is and isn't stored.
If your exchange has a budget or theme attached, Copy or Download CSV gives you a clean record of the pairings to keep for yourself as the organiser, in case anyone forgets who they've got closer to the day.
Frequently asked questions
- The tool itself doesn't hide pairings from you — it displays the full list on screen, and nothing is sent to a server. Generate the list privately rather than on a shared screen, then message each person their individual match yourself, so the surprise stays intact for participants.
- Add a "keep apart" rule for each pairing you want to avoid, using the Rules section. The generator will never produce those pairings, and will tell you clearly if your exclusions make the exchange impossible with the group you have.
- Yes — increase the group size from 2 to 3 or 4 for a "pod" style exchange where each person buys for multiple others. The keep-apart and keep-together rules still work exactly the same way.
- With pairs (group size 2), an odd number means one group becomes a three instead of leaving someone without a match — everyone is still included in the exchange.
- Only in your own browser's local storage, so your list is still there if you come back to finish setting it up. Nothing is sent to a server or seen by us — see the privacy page for full details.
